Revolutionizing Aadhaar Updates: UIDAI's Recent Amendments
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has brought about significant changes to the Aadhaar Enrollment and Renewal Rules, aiming to simplify the process for residents, non-residents (NRIs), and foreign nationals. In a circular issued on January 18, 2024, UIDAI introduced new forms for Aadhaar Enrollment and Updates, particularly streamlining the steps for updating demographic information such as addresses in Aadhaar.
Aadhaar Cancellation: Understanding the Procedure
Cancellation for Adults Above 18 Years
According to the revised rules, individuals over the age of 18 years holding an Aadhaar card now have the option to apply for the deletion or cancellation of their Aadhaar number. Form 9 is the designated form for this purpose. This application is specifically for the surrender or cancellation of the Aadhaar number upon reaching the age of 18.
Aadhaar Application for Adults
Upon reaching the age of 18 or above, individuals can apply for Aadhaar by submitting Form 1. Notably, the previous regulations from 2016 only allowed online address updates. The latest amendments broaden the scope of address updates for Aadhaar cardholders.
Cases Requiring Aadhaar Omission
Multiple Aadhaar Numbers for One Person
If it is confirmed that more than one Aadhaar number has been issued to the same individual, the first assigned Aadhaar number will be retained, while all subsequent Aadhaar numbers will be omitted.

Issues with Photograph and Biometric Information
Aadhaar numbers will be cancelled in cases where an existing photograph is used for enrollment instead of capturing a new photograph and vital biometric information is not recorded during enrollment.
Incorrect Registration of Age
If an adult is mistakenly registered as a child under the age of five to avoid capturing biometric information, the Aadhaar number will be cancelled.
Aadhaar Deactivation Criteria
Incomplete Information Capture
Aadhaar numbers will be deactivated if the resident is capable of providing information but fails to capture certain attributes, including biometric information.
Renewal Requirement for Deactivated Aadhaar
Deactivation is not permanent; holders can renew the Aadhaar number by providing valid supporting documents. The deactivation lasts until the holder renews their Aadhaar with the required documents.

Enrollment Without Valid Documents
If it is discovered later that enrollment was done without valid supporting documents, the Aadhaar number will be deactivated until the holder renews it with the necessary valid documents.
In conclusion, the recent amendments by UIDAI bring more flexibility to Aadhaar updates and provide clearer guidelines for cancellation and deactivation in specific scenarios. These changes aim to enhance the Aadhaar system's accuracy and efficiency, ensuring that individuals can easily manage their Aadhaar information throughout different life stages.
